Charles Louis Wurzbach, soldier, jurist, and legislator, son of Jacob D. and Louisa (Schindler) Wurzbach, was born in Mannheim on the Rhine, Germany, on November 25, 1835. The family immigrated to Texas in 1844 and lived in Galveston, Fredericksburg, Austin, and San Antonio. Wurzbach enlisted with J. B. McGown's company of Texas Rangersqv at the age of sixteen. From 1852 until the outbreak of the Civil Warqv he was in the regular army, rising to orderly sergeant in the United States Dragoons. In 1861 he joined Sibley's Brigadeqv and participated in the expedition to New Mexico. In 1862 Wurzbach was promoted to captain and served as aide-de-camp and flag-of-truce officer in defense of Galveston. After the Civil War he was again with the rangers. He married Kate Fink of La Grange on November 12, 1866. He was admitted to the bar in 1870 and began the practice of law in San Antonio. As city attorney from 1872 to 1875, he compiled and codified the laws of San Antonio. He represented Bexar County in the Fifteenth to Eighteenth legislatures, then served three terms as county judge, and returned to the legislature in 1891. He died in San Antonio on August 26, 1892. Harry McLeary Wurzbach, lawyer and legislator, son of Kate (Fink) and Charles Louis Wurzbach,qv was born in San Antonio on May 19, 1874, and was educated in San Antonio public schools and at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He was admitted to the bar in 1896 and began to practice law in San Antonio. That same year he married Frances Darden Wagner. During the SpanishAmerican War he volunteered as a private in Company F, First Regiment, Texas Volunteer Infantry. He resumed his law practice in Seguin in 1900 and was elected county attorney of Guadalupe County. In 1904 he became county judge and served four terms. On November 2, 1920, Wurzbach was elected to the Sixty-seventh United States Congress from the Fourteenth Texas District, the first native Texan to be a Republican representative. He was also the first Republican from Texas to be elected for more than two terms, for he was reelected to the Sixty-eighth, Sixty-ninth, Seventieth, and Seventy-second congresses. Emil Friedrich (Frederick) Wurzbach, Texas Ranger, was born in Mannheim, Baden province (now Germany), on January 6, 1838, the son of Jacob D. and Louisa (Schindler) Wurzbach. On January 14, 1844, his parents brought him to Galveston, Texas. In 1846 the family moved to Fredericksburg and, after the death of the mother, settled in Austin in 1847. In 1854 Wurzbach was a member of Capt. Pat Rogers's ranger company. In 1857 Wurzbach was in Utah with Albert Sidney Johnston.qv Wurzbach married Matilda Stowe on March 15, 1860. They had twelve children. In February 1862 he enlisted in John H. Duncan's company in the Twenty-eighth Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers. Soon after the battle of Ft. Dora Bayou Wurzbach became ill and was sent home because of greatly impaired vision, a condition that was not corrected until 1870. In 1915 he wrote a sketch of his wanderings, published in 1937 by the Yanaguana Societyqv as Life and Memoirs of Emil Frederick Wurzbach.
