Thornton is a farming community on State Highway 94 ten miles west of Groveton in western Trinity County. It was named for James D. Thornton, who moved to Trinity County from Mississippi in 1858 with his family and a group of other settlers and established a community on Little White Rock Creek. Around the time of the Civil War Thornton donated three acres for a church and school; in the 1870s two mills were built at the site. The school was consolidated with the Saron and Glendale schools after World War I. In the early 1990s the church, a cemetery, and number of houses still remained at the townsite, and descendants of the Thornton family still lived in the area. Thornton Church community has a 1988 historical marker with this wording: "James D. Thonrton (1807-c.1870s) came to this area with his family in 1858, traveling in a wagon train with other families from their Mississippi homes. The Thorntons joined their friends and relatives who had preceded them to Trinity County. Created in 1777, Richmond County was the seventh county to be formed in Georgia. Richmond County was named for the Duke of Richmond, a British defender of the colonists' cause. It was first known as the Parish of St. Paul. Augusta, the largest city in the county, was the capital of Georgia from 1785 to 1795, and is the second oldest city in Georgia. The city was named for the Princess of Wales. Augusta is the home of famed Augusta National Country Club and the Masters Golf Tournament, one of professional golf's four "majors." The Morris Musuem of Art, located in Richmond County, has the largest collection of Southern Art in the world.
