Notes about Indianola, Calhoun Co., Texas:

INDIANOLA, TEXAS. The port of Indianola, on Matagorda Bay in Calhoun County, was founded in August 1846 as Indian Point by Sam Addison Whiteqv and William M. Cook. In 1844 a stretch of beach near the point had been selected by Carl, Prince of Solms Braunfels,qv commissioner general of the Adelsverein,qv as the landing place for German immigrants bound for western Texas under the sponsorship of the society. The German landing area was referred to, briefly, as Karlshafen. One immigrant, Johann Schwartz, built the first house in the area in 1845.

Indianola achieved the rank of the second port of Texas, a position it held until the catastrophic hurricane of September 16, 1875, devastated the low-lying city and caused great loss of life. "Of the many ghost towns in Texas, none died as tragic a death as Indianola." The storm killed 176 people on September 16, 1875.

Notes about Medina Co., TX:

created from Bexar County on February 12, 1848 and organized on August 7, 1848. Most of the early settlers were brought to Medina County by Henry Castro. He arranged for 27 ships to bring in 2134 colonists from 16 countries between 1842 and 1847. The largest groups of immigrants were Alsatian (mostly Catholic) and German (mostly Lutheran). The largest group of non-immigrant settlers came from Mississippi (mostly protestant). Possibly the Mississippians came to Medina County because of the tales of Gideon Lincecum's 1834 explorations in Texas. The early settlements were: Castroville founded in 1844, Quihi in 1845, Vandenburg in 1846, New Fountain in 1846 and D'Hanis in 1848. The original county seat was Castroville, but in 1892 it was moved to Hondo. In 1861 when the state of Texas voted to secede from the Union, Medina County voted 207 to 140 against secession and some of the residents volunteered for the Union army. Medina County was certainly a melting pot of nationalities, religions and ideas.

He was a dedicated and devoted husband and father. He provided a stable and secure lifestyle for his family. He loved putting together family gatherings. He was a great cook. He was always "there" when people needed him. He was easy to talk to and a very wise man.

Served in WWII, the Korean War and still in the military during the Vietnam War. He was a dedicated military man. He spent little over 20 yrs. in the Army.

Before his death, he owned Archie's Mobile Home Services. He was a carpenter, plumber, painter, electrician, mechanic and all around fix-it man. This man never slowed down and was very active.

His death was sudden. His high blood pressure was controlled by medications. One month prior to his death, his usual doctor retired and the new doctor took him off all his meds. He had been treated at Wilford Hall Medical Center in (USAF) San Antonio, TX
