My Husband's Powell Family - beginning with his 16th great grandfather

Powell Photos, Documents and Links

I do not guarantee all of the information in this tree is accurate.  I have visited many online family trees and ran across things that don't quite match up.  I would have no idea how to verify who's information is accurate and who's is wrong.  I will happy to change any inaccurate information if provided the proof.  A lot of people have done quite a bit of research and I am one of many who are very appreciative.

This tree, in my opinion, is messed up, especially as time goes backwards.  I will have to do more research to see if I can get this straightened out.  There are too many family trees that have conflicting information.  I publish this only to get some help fixing it.

Descendants of William POWELL

Notes for William POWELL:

A story I found (online) as the Van Gundy Family Tree, states the name was originally Howell. It is believed this William Powell changed the spelling of the name. It is told he moved from Castle Medoc to Suffolk, England. He took over a manor in which he named Howelton. This line of Howel's (Powell's) descend from Hywel Dda (Howel the Good), king of Wales in the 900s, who lived on a fortified hilltop outside the present town of Crickhowell. This manor, called 'Nant Eos' is situated in Wales, near Aberystwyth. Nant Eos means 'spring or brook of the Nightingale.' In the early days the estate covered some 30, 000 acres, over the years some went to pay debts. The Powells certainly enjoyed life to the full and lived up to their position. The Powells of Nant Eos, County Cardigan, Wales, are descended from Philip ap Howell. Three Powell brothers of Nant Eos left Wales in 1606 with Capt. John Smith."

It may be that actress Katherine Hepburn was related to this Powell family. Her grandmother being of a distinguished Powell family.

Child of William POWELL and Matilda JEFFREY is:

Children of Hugh POWELL and Ann POWELL are:

6. William6 POWELL, Capt. (Hugh5, Hugh4, William3, Thomas2, William1) was born Abt. 1577 in St. Olave Parish, Surrey County, England, and died Jan 24, 1622/23 in Jamestown, James City Co., VA. He married Elizabeth WELLS. She was born Abt. 1577 in England.

Notes for William POWELL, Capt.:

Immigrated about 1607-1608. He was considered a man with character, worth and a gentleman.

Captain William Powell was a stockholder in London Company of Virginia. He sailed from England on the Sea Venture in 1609. He was the Captain of the Government Guards and a member of the 1st legislative assembly in the New World. He was killed by Indians on Chickahominy River in 1623. (info courtesy of Billy Lynch)

He owned a large amount of land in the colony of VA. He was an officer in the English Army. He came with Captain John Smith and a Nathaniel Powell, who also was a Captain. William Powell was one of the Incorporators of the 2nd Virginia Charter in 1607.

William had possession of Nathaniel Powell's estate after Nathaniel and his family had been murdered. Nathaniel's brothers and sisters in 1626 had stated that Nathaniel and William were not related. Niece's and nephew's of Nathaniel petitioned the courts for the land. Apparently William and Nathaniel had no children to claim the properties of either men.

William Powell was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1619. Captain William Powell and all of his family were murdered in the terrible massacre of 1622. In what became known as the Great Massacre of 1622, a tribe of Pamunkey Indians attacked the Jamestown settlement killing 350 men, women and children and reducing the colony's population to 1050. He was beheaded.

William was known to be a drunkard and gambler. William Powell was well acquainted with the governor, played cards with him and allegedly lost his beautiful estate called Chippokes, on the James River, in a card game with the governor.

There is a tree online, Van Gundy, who show the parents of Captain William and Captain Nathaniel Powell's parents as John born 1555 and Hester.

This really creates some problems with the tree going in a different direction of their parents being Hugh and Ann Powell.

Since I have not researched anything this far back in history, I can only hope someone's research is accurate. Many people have put alot into the research, but somewhere, someone has crossed things up. Any proof of who the parents and ancestors of Nathaniel and William would be helpful.

Now to the children of Capt. Powell. Some show John Powell born about 1580 as a son and of course George. John died 1638 so why did he not be part of the inheritance of his father's plantation and estate? I am tending to believe John was NOT a son of Capt. Powell.

Children of William POWELL and Elizabeth WELLS are:

+ 13 i. John7 POWELL, Sr., born Abt. 1596 in Howellton, Sussex, England; died Abt. 1638 in Elizabeth City, Norfolk Co., VA.

14 ii. George POWELL.

Notes for George POWELL:

May have escaped the massacre of his family. No family claimed to inherit his families property.

15 iii. Thomas POWELL.

7. Nathaniel6 POWELL, Capt. (Hugh5, Hugh4, William3, Thomas2, William1) was born Abt. 1575 in St. Olave Parish, Surrey County, England, and died Apr 08, 1621 in Jamestown, James City Co., VA. He married Joyce TRACY. She was born Abt. 1580 in England.

Notes for Nathaniel POWELL, Capt.:

A story I found (online) as the Van Gundy Family Tree, states the name was originally Howell.

About 1607 - Came to Virginia with John Smith

About 1618 - Governor of Virginia

Was murdered and beheaded by Indians. It is told in some stories that he and his family were murdered. The family was massacred by Opechancanough, at Powell's Brooke, on Nathaniel's Plantation.

It is told that he and William Powell were not related. When Nathaniel was murdered, his estate must have been inherited by William. Apparently brothers and sisters of Nathaniel petitioned the courts to say Nathaniel and William were not related. Both Nathaniel and William were Captain's in the English Army and came with Captain John Smith to Jamestown, VA. Perhaps it was greed on the part of Nathaniel and Williams's sibloings.

Nathaniel made the first map of Virginia and sent it to England, where it is now preserved in the British Museum.

The entire county of York, VA was owned by the Powell's. Nathaniel wrote much of John Smith's History of Virginia.

Child of Nathaniel POWELL and Joyce TRACY is:

16 i. Elizabeth7 POWELL, born Abt. 1598 in England. She married Thomas GARNETT Abt. 1621 in Elizabeth City, Norfolk Co., VA; born Dec 14, 1585 in Kirby Lonsdale, Lancastershire, England.

Notes for Elizabeth POWELL:

Immigrated to America in 1618 aboard the "Neptune".

Children of Thomas POWELL and Gody POWELL are:

17 i. Nathaniel7 POWELL, born Abt. 1628 in Wales; died Bet. 1677 - 1678 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.

18 ii. William POWELL, born Bet. 1620 - 1630 in Wales; died Abt. 1696 in Isle of Wight Co., VA.

22 vi. Thomas POWELL, Jr., born Bet. 1630 - 1640 in Sittingbourne Parrish, Essex Co., VA; died Mar 20, 1700/01 in Sittingbourne Parrish, Essex Co., VA.

Generation No. 7

13. John7 POWELL, Sr. (William6, Hugh5, Hugh4, William3, Thomas2, William1) was born Abt. 1596 in Howellton, Sussex, England, and died Abt. 1638 in Elizabeth City, Norfolk Co., VA. He married Katherine BURGESS Abt. 1623 in Elizabeth City, Norfolk Co., VA. She was born Abt. 1600 in Perth, Monmouthshire, England.

Thank you Patsy Ray for providing information from the book. I do not know if the book shows John as being born in 1518 or Patsy typed his birh year in error. I am assuming John was born in 1580 and not so sure about this. He would have been 45 when his son Richard was born. He surely would not have been 107 when his son Richard was born. I am believing his year of birth would be about 1596 or a few years earlier.

There is yet, another tree that shows different parents for this John as Sir Stephen Powell and Jane Jones. As I show it, his parents are Captain William Powell and Elizabeth Wells. This will take some time to sort out. I was trying to research who ha the most information (wills, deeds, etc) and who may have done the most extensive research. I researched websites that had information that may give clues to the parents of John.

It was believed that when Captain William Powell died, there was only one surviving son named George who inherited the plantation. If John was the son of Capt. Powell, then surely he would have had some inheritance in this plantation.

77. Mary Elizabeth15 POWELL (James14, John13, John12, Lemuel11, John10, Richard9, Richard8, John7, William6, Hugh5, Hugh4, William3, Thomas2, William1) was born Bet. 1828 - 1830 in NC, and died Abt. 1880 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. She married Richard Henry TOOLEY May 08, 1849 in Gates Co., NC, son of John TOOLEY and Elizabeth TAYLOR. He was born Nov 25, 1828 in NC, and died Mar 1891 in Haskell, Baylor Co., TX.

Notes for Mary Elizabeth POWELL:

Gates was formed in 1779 from Chowan, Hertford and Perquimans counties.

Notes for Richard Henry TOOLEY:

Had the title of Doctor. My thought is IF he was a doctor, what kind of doctor was he? I did not locate anything to verify this.

Richard's first wife's family was from Gates Co., NC. Richard and his wife moved from the NC/VA border to Barnesville, Pike Co., GA around 1860. They owned a dry goods store. Two of their sons were clerks. On an internet search, found Richard H. Tooley in Pike Co., GA in 1870 on the census. He was age 42 and a dry goods merchant. With wife Mary E. age 40, son William age 20 clerk in store, son John age 19 clerk in store, son James age 16 printer, daughter Emily age 14, daughter Virginia age 11, son Richard age 7, son age 3 and son Luther age 1.

They arrived in Paris, Lamar Co., TX between 1872 and 1874. Richard built a general merchandise store, hotel and livery stable in Dallas, TX on North Elm Street (now in the heart of Dallas). He also owned the land where the Dallas Fairgrounds, the Cotton Bowl Stadium and the Oak Cliff section are now located.

The original site of where the Dallas Fairgrounds was located was East Dallas. W. H. Gaston purchased 80 acres of this land in 1886 and deeded it to the Fair Assn. Was this land that Richard owned?

In 1887 Thomas L. Marsalis begins development of the Oak Cliff subdivision. This will help give a timeline of when Richard sold this property.

There are two stories surrounding Richard's death. It is said he was on his way to west Texas to buy land and was robbed and murdered and the culprits were never caught. He had quite a large sum of money in the lining of his jacket. I tend not to believe this story. Wichita and Willbarger Co., TX is not "west Texas" of Dallas Co., TX but it is "NW Texas" from Dallas Co., TX.

Another story is told that after his 2nd wife died, he sold his land in Dallas for about $9500.00 and made it to Seymour or Granbury, TX. He purchased land for 5 cents per acre from men who never transferred the land into Richard's name and they poisoned him. He let one of his sons know he had a lot of money in a trunk before he died. The culprits were caught and imprisoned. One family member said his 2nd wife talked him into selling everything in Dallas and moving away. I would believe he planned on arriving in Seymour as this is where it is believed he died and is buried.

Baylor Co., TX neighbors Wichita Co., TX (SW) and neighbors Willbarger Co., TX (S). Willbarger and Wichita Co., TX neighbor the OK border.

Seymour is in Baylor Co., TX.

Granbury is located in Hood Co., TX. Hood Co., TX is south of and neighbors Parker Co., TX. Hood Co., TX also borders Johnson Co., TX.

In the Dallas area, he was known as Watermelon Tooley as he sold watermelons on the side of the road.

Notes for Estelle O. TOOLEY:

SSDI has her birth as Oct 10, 1887. Her SS number was issued in CA.

The following was written by Estelle Tooley about the lives of her parents, Richard and Vannie (Swain) Tooley

Grandview - I was born here. Dad decided to be a minister after he was married and while Mama never objected I sensed that she desperately wished for a permanent home like her sisters had and which she expected to have.

Georgetown - Papa went to school here. He served a church on the outskirts of town which was composed mostly of women. I read a book about this section once and it stated that the men were mostly cattle rustlers or cattlemen "shooting" to keep the rustlers away. I went to this church and I found a dime and a kite in our backyard. I also climbed the porch lattice to get away from a spanking and a few more memories. Bill was born there.

Lometa - Dad's first circuit was here. We had a two-room country house. I saw a snake hypnotize a bird and I jumped over a rattler on the cellar steps. I lost my little pen knife between the hearthstones. Mama was afraid when Papa was gone and we would watch out the windows at night when we heard odd noises. We spent a night with a parishner and I stepped on a stinging lizard. At a playmate's house the children told me that their big sister's beau would cut our ears off if he saw us. We were playing in a wagon when he came out and I went screaming to the house saying, "Don't let him cut my ears off."

Copperas Cove - Due to success at Lometa Papa was given a better place. Two of his members, a Dr. and a merchant, had split the church membership. Papa reconciled them and named his second son "Clements Baird" after these men. I had scarlatina here. None of the rest got it. The merchant gave me "chocolate niger babies", candies, which I loved. About 10 years ago I found I was allergic to chocolate and so I think at least half of my migraine headaches were caused by this best tasting food. I remember one man there who had five crazy children and he would cry and say the Lord was punishing him! The great big boys wore dresses of the heaviest kind of material to keep them from tearing them to shreds. Also a mad dog died at our back step and Mama shut a corn thief in our granary when Papa was gone and the man pried off shingles and was gone before she could get help.

Coryell City - We lived here three years. Almost a life time!! There were two big swings in the yard. Also there were yellow rose bushes and fleas under the house! Mae cut up a caller's "kid gloves" and no one ever knew she did it. Plenty of wondering and searching for gloves took place. My canary escaped but was finally caught several hours later. I found a cat under the woodpile and was crazy over it but it was gone in the morning. I remember Papa's evasive answers to my questions. He said it might come back but it never did. You were born here and Mama was very sick for a long time and a woman took care of us who had a boy my age. She said he called me his sweetheart. I got madder and madder when Mama gave her a charcoal drawing she had made of me. I plotted how I could get it back but I didn't succeed. Papa got me to join the church and just before or after I told a fib on Bill and he got the spanking I should have had. All my adult life I have regretted this fib but at the time I can't remember regretting it. Also I had a boil in my ear that finally burst and I haven't forgotten the pain yet. It was here during a revival I saw a girl go into a trance. She was as stiff as a board. Mama finally took us home but Papa stayed and it was two in the morning or after before she came out of it. I remember it was likened to St. Paul's conversion.

Carbon - The other part of this charge was Gorman and Papa was so unwise as to take Mae and me with him and once we quarreled over a ball while playing on our hostess' back porch. This was a disgraceful performance. I remember the sand and grass burrs and I begged to be allowed to get Saturday Evening Post Subscriptions so I could get a watch for Mama. But the suckers didn't bite well enough. I had the measles and was delirious. The rest of you couldn't be kept in bed. You would run to the window to watch Dad make a vegetable garden. When the crook of the beans showed above the earth he pushed them back and of course they broke. How Mama laughed for he knew absolutely nothing about gardening. Grandmother came for me so I could get well in the country and I wasn't allowed to read for my eyes were weak. Papa had preached against circuses and grandmother took me to one and I thought the devil would surely get me. She had to drag me in.

About five or six years ago Tim had asked me what seemed like a million questions about the Tooleys so at Christmas time I wrote a little book for him. Ade wants a copy of it and if Betty ever gets around to typing it I will have an extra copy made for you and Bill.

Bardwell - We rented a house out in the country near one of his churches. This is the one you moved in when we went to live at Bardwell. I remember that Mae and I rode in the buggy with Papa while the rest of you rode in the house. The school there wasn't very good so Papa moved us to Ennis and we lived in a rented house. None of those schools were any good. I often wished I could jump out a window and run all the way home. Here we all had to be vacinated for smallpox as Papa had been exposed. The vaccination didn't bother any of you but me. My arm swelled several times its size and I had a high fever. Years later I was vaccinated at Switzer's College and again I had a high fever and was sent home for awhile. We lived in all three of these places while he served the same circuit. It was here and later that Uncle John came to see us every year. He and his wife were divorced and he missed his children so. I met them once in his office at the courthouse. This was in Dallas. The girls were beautiful and the boy handsome but they all seemed unhappy and ill-at-ease. I liked Uncle John. He brought us girls rings and beautiful dress materials and he would write plays for us and our friends to produce and also he was the one who went with me to the courthouse in Weatherford and get them to give me an examination so I could teach. Papa was gone and Mama was nervous for fear he wouldn't like it. I have nothing but happy memories of Uncle John but Mae does not like him. From Enola we moved to

Forreston - Now this is where the old Capt. Forrest of your memory lived. Every one went to see him and he told the stories over and over. You remember Mama liked to take long walks with us and we went there and he was sitting in a chair that was tilted against the house wall and such stories as he told us! Bill fell from a see-saw and broke his arm. I had a fight with a Baptist girl who said my father was a hypocrite and the teacher didn't even scold me (must have been a Methodist). Also a boy with one blue eye and one gray one winked at me in classtime and I said right out loud "You quit winking at me." Again the startled teacher only stared. I learned the most Bible verses and got a prize. Sorry but I can't remember them now.

Mountain Peak, Midlothian, Venus - Now again we lived at three places while serving the same circuit. Mountain Peak was the first place and do I remember that house! The queer noises the trees made when scraping the roof (at night). I would even wake Mama and was only partially satisfied with her explanations. Also I had become self-conscious and resentful of leaving friends and being pitched into a strange school. This was a two story one and full of great overgrown boys and girls who stared and I also remember the blacksmith shop but I think it was taboo for me, a girl, to even look in. I have no happy memories of this place. The school was not a good one so Papa rented a house in Midlothian. We stayed there while they were building the parsonage at Venus. I liked this town and I had my first good teacher, Mrs. Cogswell. Do you remember the cat falling in the well and Papa tying a rope around Bill and sending him down for it. This was a horrifying experience to me. Venus was the third place. We moved here just before school was out and we went to High School graduation and I looked forward to going to school. I remember the gin, etc. but the presiding Elder talked papa into sending me to Poly. I didn't want to go and Mama didn't want me to either but of course I had to.

Red Oak - I came home from college for my first vacation here. Again at Easter time and Dad insisted that I recite a great long Easter poem. I had long since simply dreaded the introductions of his family to each new charge when beginning with mama we each had to stand and be stared at as he said a few words about us. This poem was an ordeal to make up for the lost introduction, I suppose. This is where Ade was born and named for Mrs. Harrison. She was a beautiful, sweet woman but when Mr. Harrison got angry or upset he would get sullen and not speak for a long time. He had one of these spells Mama told me while all of you were there and one Saturday night they left two bath tubs of water in front of the door so that he had to fall in them and he did. He came up talking and was in a bright good mood from then on during your stay. My poor mother! She maybe had no more hardships than any other minister's wife but they seemed legion to me when I look back. Dad was doing a work that he wanted to do and that he thoroughly enjoyed but she carried the burdens of the household -- especially during the latter years when you boys were growing up. Sometime before the Red Oak days I promised myself I would never marry a minister or a traveling salesman. And I never would have done so. I feel very thankful to George for having always given me our very own home where roots could be put down and one could feel secure.

Salido - I have vacation memories only of this place. I am sorry to hear the creek is all filled with willows. It was a pretty place. I read Les Miserables every afternoon in the quiet church. Once I wore a dark blue many pleated dress to church and when they said the benediction I looked down and I had my skirt on wrong side out. I almost ran from the church but I know now it could hardly have been noticed due to the way it was made. Sis tells me that she and a girl friend once went out the window after Papa and Mama were asleep and went to a party. They got there in time for ice cream and cake. Too young for boy friends so there was no scandle!!!

Hewitt - Again just there for vacation.

Abbott - Also vacation for part of summer. I remember that a negress asked me to write a proclamation of Independence for her. I gave her a copy but I doubt it she could read it.

Weatherford - To rest at last for my mother and a home to come to once in a while for short intervals. It never seemed much like a real home to me but I am sure it must have to the rest of you who lived there all of each year after year. After I was married I was not too surprised to find he had sold the house and bought another in Weatherford. Mama told me he had wanted to move to West Texas but she had refused to go. He had the true itching feet of a pioneer circuit and if heaven is up or down or way out yonder I am sure he must be still riding circuit. As for Mother I hope she is satisfied in a permanent home of her own and her crown should be as bright if not brighter than his.

Roy owned his home and it's value was $6000. He was a veteran.

Roy had spoken to his family about attending the last Harris Co., TX public hanging. In my research, I found on Feb. 13, 1916, the last hanging took place in Harris Co., TX. Henry Sampson was hanged for murder and robbery. Roy would have been 19 at this time. In Texas, each county performed their executions until hanging was replaced by electricution in 1924.

Information found online: Colorado County District Court Records

Criminal Cause File Index, 1837-1930

Criminal Cause File No. 3047: State of Texas v. Perry Frisson, Willie Dumas, and Henry Sampson (1911) burglary.

Criminal Cause File No. 3050: State of Texas v. Perry Frisson, Willie Dumas, and Henry Sampson (1911) burglary

(This may be the same Henry Sampson that was executed)

Roy talked to his grandson Ricky about training as a pilot and visited a barber shop in downtown San Antonio, TX, where part of his training was being spun in a barber chair. When visiting the Alamo and downtown San Antonio, across the street from the Alamo, on the 2nd floor was a display of a barber chair. Apparently this was the place. The chair was known as the Barany Chair. It is used to eliminate the effects of spatial disorientation. I read an article where pilot training included 3 days of the Barany Chair. I found nothing online about this particular barber shop/military training facility.

Plainview Daily Herald - Tuesday Back In Time 06-20-2006

Wendell Tooley, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Tooley of Kress, recently completed basic training at Camp Robinson, Ark., and is now a typist in the supply depot at Camp Carson, Colo. (Tooley, retired former owner of the Floydada and Tulia papers, was an advertising salesman for The Herald for several years in the 1950s.

Although Wendell Tooley received more than 50 press association awards while editor and publisher of The Floyd County Hesperian and The Tulia Herald, his greatest contribution to journalism and newspapers was probably the establishment of three offset printing plants.

Blanco Offset at Floydada, Brazos Offset at Slaton and Palo Duro Offset at Canyon, print over 55 newspapers and publications per week.

Tooley was also a stockholder in the second offset printing plant in the Panhandle of Texas, Southwest Offset in Hereford. His partners were Jimmy Gillentine, Sam Williams, Bill Turner and Troy Martin.

Tooley's greatest honor was his selection by his peers into the Panhandle Press Association's Hall of Fame in Amarillo.

He owned all or part of several weekly newspapers at Littlefield, Floydada, Lockney, Crosbyton, Olton, Slaton, Tahoka and Canyon.

He wrote a weekly column "Caprock Chat" every week at The Hesperian and "Country Editor" at the Tulia Herald.

He usually wrote an editorial also. His most controversial and successful editorial campaigns caused the school board in Floydada to fully integrate the school system and helped to prevent the Department of Energy from digging a nuclear waste repository in Swisher County.

Upon graduation from Kress High School in 1944, Tooley's newspaper career began with a job at The Plainview Daily Herald sweeping the floor and delivering office supplies.

He then attended McMurry University for a year before being drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in the 38th Regimental ski and mountain troops.

When released from service he completed his bachelor of science in journalism at McMurry in 1949. He worked nightside at the Abilene Reporter News while at McMurry.

After McMurry, he and his wife, Mary Tom, spent a year in Missouri where he received his master's degree in advertising from the University of Missouri. He worked part time for Brown's Advertising Agency while in Missouri.

In 1950 he was back at The Plainview Daily Herald in the display advertising department.

In 1955 and 1956 he was professor of advertising art Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash.

He returned to the Daily Herald as advertising manager.

In 1958 the Tooleys moved to Littlefield when newspaper publisher Sam Williams offered him a chance to buy stock in the Littlefield newspapers. He was a partner with Bill Turner and Williams until 1963, when he sold his stock to Dick Reavis.

The Tooleys moved to Floydada when they purchased The Floyd County Hesperian from Syl McBeath, picking up McBeath's note to longtime Floydada publisher Homer Steen.

While at Floydada he and Speedy Nieman bought the Slaton Slatonite. Tooley also bought the Tahoka newspaper from Frank Hill and the Crosbyton newspaper from Hubert Curry. He later traded Crosbyton to Jim Reynolds and converted Floydada and Lockney into a twice-weekly.

In 1979 he sold The Hesperian to the Bluebonnet group and bought the Tulia Herald from H.M. Baggarly. He was editor-publisher of the Tulia Herald until 1992 when Reynolds became editor and co-publisher. Then Tooley taught a semester of journalism at West Texas A&M University in Canyon.

Reynolds published The Herald until Tooley sold it to Chris Russett in 1994.

Tooley remains president of the three printing plants and a partner in the Canyon News. He sold the Slatonite to Jim Davis in 1996.

He was president of the Panhandle Press Association; served on the Texas Press Association and West Texas Press Association boards. He has served on the United Methodist Reporter board in Dallas for over 20 years and the McMurry University board for over 20 years. He was on the Texas Tech Mass Communications School advisory board for six years.

In closing, Tooley pays tribute to his wife of 48 years, Mary Tom Kirk, a Methodist minister's daughter he found at McMurry. She has worked for the Tooley newspapers, taught school and is a fantastic homemaker.

Tooley adds, "I'm also extremely proud of our children." Brad is editor-publisher of the Canyon News; Keith, editor publisher of North Lake Travis Log; Karla and Chuck Hutchison, publishers of the Thrifty Nickel in Abilene; and Wendy and Kent Bridenstine, stockholders and manager of Palo Duro Offset in Canyon.

Wendell and Mary Tom sang in the Methodist choir 38 years, and he has held about every office in the church. He is a past president of Rotary, Kiwanis and chamber of commerce.

The couple has traveled to over 20 foreign countries, now seeing the U.S. in an RV. They have seen it all except two states. Mary Tom is an accomplished artist. Wendell plays tennis, golf, fishes and plays guitar. They sing gospel at church and RV camps.

Oh yes The Tooleys have seven grandchildren!
