Powell Photos, Documents and Links Family of William Powell born about 1453 Wales and Catherine John (16th great grandfather and grandmother of Ricky Lynn Tooley) Family tree and extensive research by Paul Mitchell (His tree submitted at rootsweb 2004) Captain William Powell was the 11th great grandfather of my husband, Ricky Lynn Tooley.
The oldest
continuously operated plantation in the nation, the Chippokes Plantation State
Park is one of the Commonwealth’s most beautiful parks. English Captain
William Powell, who is believed to be listed as a shareholder in the Virginia
Company of London in the Charter of 1609, was the first to purchase the property
around 1619. He was Lieutenant Governor of Jamestown. The property at
Lower Chippokes was then passed to his son, George Powell. NOTE: In other
biographies, it is believed all of William's family was murdered by Indians
except for George, who may have escaped. However, it is believed he was
never heard from and the family of a Nathaniel Powell, who also was a Captain
and closely associated with William, petitioned the courts for the property.
It was believed after Nathaniel and his family were also murdered by Indians,
William inherited all of his estate. Nathaniel's brothers and sisters
petitioned the court stating William and Nathaniel were not related. I
found no mention as to the decision of the courts of how they divided this
property. I read no one claimed inheritance and the land was leased to
someone other than family. I found a family tree that indicates it was
only William who was murdered and his wife remarried.
Captain William Powell born about 1577-1579 England came to Virginia about 1607-1908. The above is the historical marker than honors his plantation. He was murdered and beheaded by Indians in 1623, along with his family. Proceedings of the Virginia Assembly of 1619 (Captain William Powell is mentioned) House of Burgesses (Virginia) Garnet's in America (mention of Captain William Powell) Chippokes Plantation State Park is located at 695 Chippokes Park Road, Surry, Virginia. It is in a rural, agricultural area off the James River and Route 10 in Surry County, and is protected under the state park system. Chippokes Plantation was established in 1617 by Captain William Powell of the Jamestown Settlement in the Virginia Colony. In 1967, the 1,700 acre plantation was donated to the Commonwealth by Mrs. Victor Stewart for use as a state park. One of the largest working farms in the nation, Chippokes has kept its boundaries since the 1600s. The structures and artifacts on the property reflect plantation life from the early 17th century to the present. The antebellum Chippokes Mansion and the Farm & Forestry Museum both offer scenic tours of the estate, cultivated formal gardens and woodlands. (information courtesy of Wikipedia). Apparently the plantation was owned by a few people until Albert Carroll Jones purchased the property and actually lived here. It remained in his family until 1918, when the plantation was auctioned off and the winning bid was $47,000.00. The plantation is now owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Jamestown, Virginia was the birthplace of America Captain William Powell and Nathaniel Powell (known to be brothers) came with Captain John Smith to America and settled in Jamestown. This was the same John Smith that the Indian Princess Pocahontas saved his life. There is much interesting reading on the Powell's and Smith.
