Information about Helotes, Bexar Co., TX:

It was first settled around 1856 by Mexicans who intermarried with the Apache Indians camped in the vicinity. A man named Chaca was supposed to have been the first person to build a house and cultivate a cornfield at the site and may have been responsible for the name, which in Spanish means "green roasting ear of corn. A group of mostly immigrants came in the mid 1800's to the northwestern area of what is now Bexar County, to establish a better life for themselves and a better future for their descendants. These settlers gradually formed into a community which included farms and ranches, a stage coach stop, post office, store, school, cemetery and church. The Biering family was very prominent in the founding membership of Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes.

Tried many spelling variations to locate Hermann and family in the 1900 census and cannot locate. Possible they weren't counted???

Served in WWII, the Korena War and still in the military during the Vietnam War. He was a dedicated military man.

Before his death, he owned Archie's Mobile Home Services. He was a carpenter, plumber, painter, electrician, mechanic and all around fix-it man.

His death was sudden. His high blood pressure was controlled by medications. One month prior to his death, his usual doctor retired and the new doctor took him off all his meds. He had been treated at Wilford Hall Medical Center in (USAF) San Antonio, TX

Thelma Caroline (Tezel) Ahrens died May 4, 1998 at the age of 91. She was born November 24, 1906 to Lena and Charles Tezel in San Antonio. She lived her whole life in the Helotes and San Antonio areas. Harry R. Ahrens became her husband May 20, 1925 at Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes. Survivors are their four children, Ruth Moorman and husband, Tommy; Audrey Boezinger; June Davidson and husband, Buddy; and Charles Ahrens and wife, Beverly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry and son-in-law, Otto Boezinger. Thelma was always giving care to family, friends and her church. Many relatives made their home for short periods of time in her home. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter with another one on the way. She was active in St. John's Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes. She did everything from Sunday School teacher to President of the Women's Group. She was also a member of St. Luke's Auxiliary. Many will miss her gentle ways, loving smile and sincere love of others.
