Notes for Jeffrey MURRELL:

Jeffery moved to Middle Tennessee prior to Thomas, Sr. In 1805, he purchased 146 acres in Williamson County, a short distance from where Thomas would settle (in Dickson County) about a year later. His land adjoined that of another brother, Drury, and was near his father-in-law, Mark Andrews.

Jeffery was an itinerant preacher and traveled throughout the countryside preaching the Gospel of Christ. His reputation was spotless, but his high

moral standards were not shared by his wife, Zelphia Andrews Murrell, and their children.

Before 1820, Jeffery and "Mom Murrell" (as Zelphia was sometimes called) owned an inn near Columbia, Tennessee. When he was at home, Jeffery chided Zelphia to quit "walking the way she did, hips swinging and breasts undulating, and long thighs molding themselves against her skirt with each

step." (Jonathan Daniels, The Devil's Backbone, p. 240). He pleaded with her to stay at home and preach the Gospel.

Instead, in his absence, she converted the inn into a brothel and a den of thieves. She taught her children to steal. After she made a traveler "so

weary from the sport she had given him on his bed...that he probably would have slept through an earthquake," her son, John, or another child would pick the traveler's pockets and take anything of value (Ibid., p. 240).

From Churches: "A Faithful Witness" A History of First Baptist Church of Homer, Claiborne Parish, LA

One of the earliest successes of their missionary efforts came at the invitation of another early settler--John Murrell, Sr. John and Margaret Sasser Murrell were Baptists and had previously requested visits from Baptist ministers as far away as Ft. Miro near Monroe. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/claiborne/churches/fbchomer.txt

History: John Murrell-First Settler, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana

"Father Of Claiborne Parish" John Murrell Arrived In August Of 1819

If you travel just six miles southwest of Homer on the Dutchtown Road you will find what is left of the old homeplace of John Murrell, Sr., the first permanent white settlers within the present boundaries of Claiborne Parish. A marker erected beside the road on June 15, 1958 reads, "John Murrell's Home, Claiborne Parish Government began here about 1828."

In the summer of 1819, when there were no roads, only trails among a land covered with a dense thicket of brush, briars, and vines, you might wonder why Murrell came to choose this particular spot. According to descendant, Lillian Malone Robinson, Murrell selected the site because it was near a creek that ran over charcoal and so he knew the water was filtered and clean.

It wasn't until around 1824 when fires raged across the dense underbrush and cleaned off the face of the land, leaving an open, beautiful country. Wild game of every kind were plentiful, especially deer and turkey and it wasn't long before North Louisiana became known as "Hunter's Paradise."

Two hundred eighty acres of the old homeplace is presently under a 99-year lease to Williamette Industries, who recently clear cut the property. Thanks to Haynesville resident Doug Marquardt, District Forester for Williamette Industries in Emerson, Arkansas, the site is still in tact and several dead and fallen trees have been removed from the Murrell Cemetery.

Marquardt learned of the site's historical value eight years ago when. Boy Scout Jermey Houston Vickers of the Yatasi District chose the cemetery for an Eagle Scout project. Vickers made and hung a sign over the entrance of the cemetery which reads - JOHN MURRELL SENIOR.

In the winter of 1818, Murrell, his wife and six children left Carthage, (Smith Co.,) Tennessee with a few household goods, cooking utensils, a pack horse, two dogs and a rifle and traveled by barge down the Cumberland, Ohio, Mississippi, and Red Rivers, seven years before Louisiana became the eighteenth state to join the Union. Ten families joined the Murrells at Nashville, by the names of Wallace, Clark, Ward, Manning, Dyer, Hutson, Robinson, Duty, Dooly, and Peterson.

Although most of Murrell's neighbors were Indians, a number of pioneers in the surrounding area are known, such as legendary trapper-trader John Honeycutt in Union parish and the Feazels in Downsville area. A widow Long and her son Davis Long settled the Haynesville area in 1818, built a log cabin on the north side of Dixie Bayou, but moved the next year, leaving the area unsettled for years.

Several years earlier, a group of Carolina immigrants settled east of Claiborne parish. James Huey settled south of present Calhoun, while son-in-law Daniel Colvin settled at Colvinsville, which was later renamed Vienna. Other settlers included names such as Sims, Butler, Peters, Rainey, Pipes, Sykes (at Sykes' Ferry), Alden, and a Richard Fields near Old Germantown.

On March 29, 1819, Murrell's seventh child, Isaac, was born and is considered to have been the first white child born in Claiborne Parish.

During the first two years, several families settled in the Flat Lick Community. They were Martin and James Allen, Obadiah Driskill, Abraham Crownover, Jessie Williams, Thomas Gray, Dr. Hugh Walker (a self trained doctor), Adam and Nedham Reynolds, Joseph Edwards or Edmonds, John and James McCarty, William M. Gryder (first blacksmith in area), Daniel Moore, Mr. Holcomb, and Mr. Brazil. J. McCrady or McCarty raised the first significant cotton crop in 1826, about the time the first slaves appeared in the area.

Murrell's two-story house, known as the Flat Lick Plantation, had eighteen rooms with two chimneys made of native stone on each side for fireplaces on both floors. This house would serve as the first church, with Baptist minister James Brinson and Newitt Drew holding monthly services, assisted by Arthur McFarland. It also became the first school when Murrell hired James Ashburner Conley in 1822 to teach for $15 per month. The first road in northwest Louisiana known as the Military Road was built in 1828 and passed directly by the Murrell home.

In 1823, the Murrell home served as the first post office, named "Allen Settlement" in honor of Martin Allen, the first justice of the peace. Murrell served as postmaster. The first store opened in 1822 near the Murrell home, closed a year or so later, then was reopened by Robert Lee Kilgore and James Lee in 1825.

In 1828, law and government was also dispensed from the Murrell home, serving as the courthouse until the Police Jury of newly created Claiborne parish chose Russellville to be the first parish seat.

Several letters written in the 1860's tell of Murrell's youngest son, Isaac, who had a young slave named Edmond Merritt, described as "a faithful one he was". Merritt went with nephews Perry and John to fight in the Civil War.

On the morning of Sept. 17, 1862 one son told Merritt to take John Sr.'s gold watch home, that he would not be back. That night after the Battle of Sharpsburg, Merritt went onto the battlefield, turning over hundreds of dead to see their faces, but could not find them. Later, after returning their belongings and the gold watch, Merritt found John had been killed. Perry and friend, R.A. White, had been wounded.

After the Civil War, John, Jr. gave each of his former slaves forty acres, a cabin, and the right to be buried in the family cemetery. They took the last name of White. One marker reads, "Enoch White was born during the years of slavery. He reached a ripe old age. I hope to meet him some day in the great beyond. by his only daughter Victoria Lewis." Another reads, Allen White, Jr. PVT 1 CL, 329 Labor BN, Jan 26, 1895, Mar 19, 1933. Let not the dead forgotten be, Lest men forget that they must die."

At the entrance to the Murrell Cemetery is a grave marker which reads "Frederick Miller, Born In Germany, 1765 - 1822, grandfather of Emmaline Miller Botzong Langheld and Long John Miller, First white man buried in Claiborne Parish."

Few descendants of Murrell remain in the Homer area, however, Homer resident Ed Seeliger's two granddaughters, Angela Elaine Seeliger Hernandez, born Feb. 3, 1974, and Allison Yvette Seeliger, born July 27, 1977 are direct descendants of William Columbus Murrell, son of John Jr. William Columbus was said to have lost John Sr.'s gold watch on the way to the state fair in 1896.

Murrell was buried at the Murrell Cemetery on his home place, Flat Lick Plantation. He was a talented, enterprising person who became known as the "first man to introduce civilization to northwest Louisiana." and his epitaph reads, "Sacred to the memory of John Murrell, Sr. who died Jan. 25, 1847 age 63 years, 5 days. His creed was Faith, Hope, and Charity." One early settler, possibly John Murrell, Jr. wrote that "...we were all plain people then, with but few wants and much love for our fellow man."

An Early Tennessee "Terrorist" http://www.tellicotimes.com/Murrell.html - Part of this article:

In reality, John A. Murrell may have been nothing more than a charismatic organizer and leader of a band of small time thieves and slave stealers. Certainly many of the outrageous criminal acts associated with John A. Murrell were committed by men with no real link to the Murrell Klan. Certainly many other stories associated with the "Murrell Clan" were pure myth, legend and fiction. But this man came to be known as the Great Land Pirate and the leader of the notorious Murrell Clan. In the 182O’s and 183O’s people who lived and worked along the Natchez Trace, the Mississippi River and its tributaries and middle and west Tennessee lived in fear of contact with members of the "Murrell Klan," It was reputed to have included hundreds of members, if not thousands. Some of the leading political and business leaders of the time were reputed to have been members of the Murrell Clan. Many law enforcement officers were also reputed to be Murrell Clan members. In the early 19th century frontier the line between the lawless and the law-abiding citizens was not always easy to distinguish. John A. Murrell himself boasted that half of the Grand Council of his Mystic Clan was made up of "men of high standing and many of them in honorable and lucrative offices." It was reported that when he was about to make a deathbed confession, one of those members exclaimed, "Great God, John, don't give us all away!" (Botkin, p. 196)

The Great Western Land Pirate, Again http://www.51illinois.org/Murrell.htm

JOHN ANDREWS MURRELL

1806-1844

John A. Murrell, a thief and counterfeiter, spent much of his short life in prison and was a notorious outlaw in antebellum Middle Tennessee. In 1844 he died in Pikeville at the age of thirty-eight, shortly after completing nine years hard labor for slave stealing.

Murrell acquired a reputation as a criminal mastermind soon after his imprisonment. In 1835 a small pamphlet appeared which purported to be Murrell's life story as he himself had revealed it to Virgil A. Stewart (the chief witness against Murrell). Murrell's "confessions" not only described the murderous career of a monster with a grudge against the human race, but also purported to reveal the existence of a vast conspiracy, the aim of which was to bring about a region-wide slave insurrection. The pamphlet would have been consigned to richly deserved oblivion had not certain white residents of Madison County, Mississippi, believed Stewart's outrageous story. Slaves were questioned near Livingston, the county seat, and under torture they revealed the existence of the conspiracy. Fear spread rapidly through the other counties of western Mississippi. White men, mostly outsiders and strangers believed to be members of the imprisoned Murrell's band, were rounded up. The hangings and whippings began, though with a semblance of legality, as committees of safety sprang up and handed down sentences. Over fifty white men and an unknown number of blacks (mostly freemen) were either hanged or savagely whipped and banished. The entire episode was inspired by the depraved Stewart's imaginary tale.

John A. Murel

John A. Murel, the "western land-pirate," or slave stealer, was a native of Tennessee, and in the 1830s was a famous character much talked of and dreaded in Mississippi. His home was in Madison County, Tenn., when he became notorious. A pamphlet was published by Virgil A. Steward in 1835 purporting to reveal the secrets of Murel and his confederates, from which it appears that there was a confederacy of men with great shrewdness, embracing some men of law learning, for the stealing of slaves, and the harboring of runaways, the shipping of them to Texas or other distant regions, and the sale at a great profit to the gang.

So skillful were the operations of the gang, and so adroit their manipulations of the law, that slaveholders, when they suspected Murel of the loss of their slaves, were disposed to admit their loss as final without further effort at recovery. One method was to suggest to a discontented slave to run away and take refuge at a certain place, with one of the confederates. This person held him as a runaway, supposedly ignorant of where the slave came from. Presently an advertisement appeared describing the runaway, and offering a reward. Thereupon the harborer of the slave assumed the status of a taker-up of the runaway, and in a sense, attorney-in-fact for the owner. Instead of returning the slave, he would choose to commit a breach of trust and transport and sell him. There was no remedy except by suit for the value of the salve, and no property could be found on which to levy.

In 1834 Murel was arrested for slave harboring, fined several hundred dollars, and in the absence of property, was sentenced to slavery for five years. He appealed to the Supreme Court, and was about to be set free, when Stewart became associated with him. Stewart claimed that after he had gained the outlaw's confidence, the plan was revealed of a general insurrection of slaves to take place on the night of December 25, 1835, by which time Murel expected his clan of white men to be 2,000 strong. His purpose was simply to cause more bloodshed and destroy more property than any other robber who had ever lived, and he felt confidence in his success because half of his "grand council" were men of high standing and "many of them in honorable and lucrative offices." This was the basis of a book that Stewart wrote and proceeded to sell through the country, creating a great panic and much bloodshed. The book contained a list of the members of the "Mystic Clan," in each of the slaveholding States, also what purported to be a narration by Murel of various robberies and murders he had been guilty of, in Mississippi mainly.

His grave was dug at an angle of 45 degrees to the usual east and west line. A few nights after the burial the grave was violated, and his head was found to be severed and taken away. The body was reburied and has remained undisturbed since the reburial.

Murrell's Caves, Sabine Parish, LA by Linda Vickers Seaman, Submitted by: Carl Dilbeck

These caves, according to some old way-bills, were said to have been outlaw "Murrell's" number one "bank". The way-bills mention a seventh room where over $15,000 in Spanish silver and gold bars were hidden. On my exploring these caves, I saw no indication that a seventh room had been found as of yet. Also, I want to add, these caves are very dangerous. There are holes in the ground that appear to be bottomless, and if someone were there alone and fall in, they could not get out. 79 ii. Zilpha MURRELL, born Abt. 1833 in MS; died Abt. 1864 in Tyler Co., TX. She married Angus LEWIS Jun 05, 1850 in Mobile Co., MS.

Notes for Zilpha MURRELL:

Zilpha’s father was a preacher and the Murrell name is still well known in that part of Mississippi. Zilpha was born in Mississippi at a time when there were some 130,000 people populating the state. The government had just finished moving most of the Indian tribes out of the state. Almost half of this population was slaves, the state was already predominately a plantation economy.

When Zilpha was 17 years old, her older sister Margaret died. Margaret’s widower, Angus Lewis then courted and married Zilpha. Within the year, Angus moved with Zilpha (and Margaret’s child, Lee Pearson) to Texas. They first lived in Karnes County Texas and raised cattle. It was a rugged new territory.

Zilpha was 28 when the Confederacy fired the shots that started the Civil War. Zilpha bore Angus five children before joining her sister Margaret. She died in Tyler County Texas at the age of 31. Either Angus had moved the family to east Texas before her death or they were there on a visit. We know that Angus’s younger brother, Stephen had moved to east Texas by this time.

Although Lee Pearson (Margaret’s child) was approaching adulthood, the other children were too young to take care of themselves. To compound the family’s trouble, Angus died the next year. The Civil War had made a shambles of the South so there was little likelihood of support from her family in Mississippi.
