Notes for James Bird HUFF:  They had 3 children while in GA and they all died at young ages.

He was Superintendent of Schools in Hollywood, AR, and his daughter Tallulah Hope also taught school there. He was a photographer and made beautiful pictures and frames. James and Elizabeth lived in Claiborne and Bossier Parishes in Louisiana, and White Cliff and Foreman, Arkansas. He served the Confederacy in the 26th Arkansas Infantry, as a third corporal, Company B; he was enrolled at Monticello, Arkansas, 5/3/1862 by Capt. Sam Gibson. Records show James B. was promoted to first corporal and served through 2/29/1864. The regiment was assigned to McRae’s Brigade, Shoup’s Division, First Corps, Army of the Trans-Mississippi, and fought at Prairie Grove and Devil’s Backbone.

A James B. Huff is listed as postmaster of the Bethel Springs Post Office (later Wards Mills) in Claiborne Parish from its establishment on 12/4/1877 to 2/18/1879.

Notes for Tallulah Hope HUFF:  Chapman abandoned her less then three months after they were married. The divorce was not final until August 1887. She was given custody of their child Ethel, who later went to live her grandparents, and then her aunt Lillian Madura.

Tallulah is a Choctaw name which means "leaping water". She was given the middle name "Hope" because her parents "hoped" that she would survive, since the first three children they'd born died in infancy.

Engineer’s Fall In His Locomotive Results In Death

The Soper Democrat August 24, 1916 – transcribed by Ron Henson

A fall while in his locomotive Thursday night resulted in the death of Lucius J. Huff, 44, late Friday afternoon at a local hospital [sic]. In falling Huff struck his abdomen against a guard rail and the injury required an operation from which he did not recover.

Huff was an engineer on the Houstan [sic] & Texas Central yards. He is survived by his wife and son, Edwin Huff, 1424 Pulaski avenue; two brothers, Charles and Flavius Huff and sister, Mrs. W.M. Gathright of Forman, Ark.

Funeral services were held from the Sloan & Harveson chapel at 10:30 Saturday morning and interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. Rev. Forrest Smith, pastor of Broadway Baptist Church officiated and the services were under the auspices of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers No. 187. – Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.

Mr. Huff formerly lived in this country and has many friends here who regret to learn of his untimely death.

** Lucius J. Huff was buried in an unmarked grave in Greenwood Cemetery. In 2003, Edwin P. Huff and Thomas C. Huff purchased a marker bearing the insignia of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers to mark the resting place of their ancestor.
