Notes for George W. GIBBONS, Sr., M. D.:

Arived in AR in 1849 (?). He was 20/21 years old. After arriving in AR, he established a medical practice and farmed the fertile flatlands of Portland. He was killed in the Civil War in AR. Of the many AR Civil War records, I did not locate George as being in the military in the Civil War. It is said Jayhawkers killed him during the Civil War. Another source has it he was killed by jayhawkers near Bear Creek, AR

Trying to establish where in AR he was in 1850. If he was in AR in 1850. Sources have him marrying Charlotte Wann in 1854 in TN. Between 1834 - 1875, No Gibbons were married in Jackson Co., AR. I believe George and Charlotte were married in 1847 or 1848.

Interview with Mollie Thomas

My name is Mary Elizabeth, but I am called Mollie. My father's name was John Gibbons my mother was Sally (Sarah) Hibbens. My mother was raised as an orphan from the age of 6. My 2 brothers Willie and Croft was born in south Arkansas. I had a sister Meg who was bitten by a mad dog in November and died in Feb. The dog also bit my cousin who lived with us Zade Laster but it didn't break the skin. Meg, mom, dad, older sister and little brother are buried in Leslie. My mother had one brother Tom Hibbens. My father's people were from down south Arkansas. My grandfather was killed in the Civil War by the jayhawkers down by Bear Creek.

The Zade Laster mentioned is my great grandmother Zada Laster Waters, her mother Nancy was a sister to John Gibbons.

Possibly walked the Trail of Tears - more research to confirm this. This can not be true as the Cherokee Trail of Tears was between 1837 and 1838. May 28, 1830 Jackson signed into law the Indian Removal Act, a bill requiring all Indians living east of the Mississippi to leave their homes and be relocated far to the west in what was called Indian Territory. 1830 to 1833, Choctaws moved to Oklahoma (Indian Territory). Creeks, Seminoles and Chickasaws were moved to Oklahoma between 1834 and 1838.

April 1930 Mrs. J. M. Wallis Obituary Obituary Clipping

On April 5, 1930, at 8:45 P. M. there passed from this life into that great beyond the soul of Mrs. J. M. Wallis. Mrs. Wallis was before her marriage, Miss Annie Robinson. She was married early in life to James M. Wallis who preceded her in death about 1910. To this union was born six children. Three girls and three boys. Two sons, Virgil Wallis of Rock Springs and W. A. Wallis of Utopia, and several grand-children survive. Mrs. Wallis was born in

Guinett county, Georgia, April 5, 1853, being 77 years of age the day of her death. She came to Texas 36 years ago. Being of sturdy pioneer stock she remained in West Texas the closing years of her life. She resided at Utopia since 1906. Mrs. Wallis was a loyal wife and devoted mother. In her death the family have sustained a great loss. She possessed that hospitality characteristic of the southern home, and no friend or stranger was unwelcome at her home. She was a member of Utopia lodge Order of Eastern Star. Funeral services were conducted at the grave by the Rev. J. C. Gibbons, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. J. R. Hilleman, pastor of the

Baptist church and by the Order of the Eastern Star. The large crowd present attested to the high esteem in which she was held. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved in their sorrow.

He was a dedicated and devoted husband and father. He provided a stable and secure lifestyle for his family. He loved putting together family gatherings. He was a great cook. He was always "there" when people needed him. He was easy to talk to and a very wise man.

Served in WWII, the Korean War and still in the military during the Vietnam War. He was a dedicated military man. He spent little over 20 yrs. in the Army.

Before his death, he owned Archie's Mobile Home Services. He was a carpenter, plumber, painter, electrician, mechanic and all around fix-it man. This man never slowed down and was very active.

His death was sudden. His high blood pressure was controlled by medications. One month prior to his death, his usual doctor retired and the new doctor took him off all his meds. He had been treated at Wilford Hall Medical Center in (USAF) San Antonio, TX
