Notes for Robert Leander DUNMAN: Owner of the D & O H ranch, one of the largest in the state. He brought to this country the famous Double Fleur de Lis (Lily of France) brand and was the fiction character in Walter Gann's late novel, "The Trail Boss". His ranch which covered a large portion of the territory between San Angelo and Coleman, was the setting and Mrs. Dunman was recently presented with an autographed copy of one of the first printed. Notes for Lucinda Elvina WINFREE: Mrs. R. L. Dunman of Coleman, Texas, was born in Liberty County, Texas in 1848 and has been a native of the state for 90 years. Her husband was the owner of the D & O H ranch, one of the largest in the state. "Well I've been here ninety years," chuckled Mrs. Dunman, and her brown eyes twinkled youthfully as she continued. "I tell my friends sometimes that ninety years is too long a time but they are kind enough to tell me they wish I could live ninety more. "I knew General Sam Houston when Texas and I were both quite young. NOTE: C12 - 2/11/41 - Texas 00022He would stop with his negro servant and visit with my uncle, Amos Barber, who lived near the big hill in Liberty County which bears his name and which is now the site of the famous Barber Hill oil field. He gave my uncle some of his many books and a table with folding leaves which is still in the family. "My father, T. J. Winfree died when I was one year old and half of every thing he had, land, negroes, cattle and horses, became mine. " I was 12 years old when the Civil War broke out and I married theyear it closed. I never had an oil lamp in my home until 1869. In the fall I would mould and put away the supply of tallow candles. One year I remember fixing twelve dozen. "In 1879 we came to Coleman County with 2,000 head of steers. The two children and I rode in a hack, always keeping within reach of the riders in case something went wrong. We tried to keep far enough ahead to select the campsites. The first night out on the trail we put the negro boy, who drove my hack, out to watch the horses. He wasn't very dependable, so as he watched the horses I watched him. After awhile Mike, our Irish horse wrangler, went on watch and we all went to sleep. Next morning there was no Mike and the horses were also gone. The men found the horses fifteen miles back the trail toward home and Mike had gone three miles back to Pleasantown and got 00033drunk. He came [straggling?] into camps that evening looking very sheepish but Mr. Dunman did not give him the scolding that he probably expected. We needed him pretty badly so nothing was said and the caravan moved on toward Brady Mountains. Our household goods were hauled in old Chihuahau, a gigantic old freight wagon. The old high wheeler was given this name because it had been used during the Civil War to haul freight out of Old Mexico. While the historic old wagon was lumbering along with the herd, we got on the wrong road and was wandering over the mountainous Devil's River country when my husband overtook us, riding hard. 'Where do you think you are going?' he shouted. 'We must be crossing the Alps,' I replied. We were seven miles off the trail and lost. "As we crossed the Brady Mountains I saw the trail followed by the Indians who raided Bluntzer's ranch and killed his Mexican sheep herder. I didn't sleep that night but the Indians had done their worst in these parts and we made our destination undisturbed. When we reached Coleman City I chose the present home site and have lived on it 58 years. "My husband's ranch covered 400 square miles and lay between the Brady Mountains and the Colorado River. The cowboys pronounced our brand, Double Flower-du Loose and it was made like this . Here is a copy of the old 00044original branding iron. I had my son put that little shelf right up here by the front door to keep it on, so it would be handy when so many ask to see it. It was known from the Pecan Bayou to the Pecos from 1873 to 1890. The Fleur de Lis (meaning Lily of France) had its origin in the French ancestry of my father's family. Later it was used on the horses only and the cattle were branded with a D on the side and O H on the hip, thus the ranch became known as the D & O H ranch. "The old house is still standing in Elmer Whitfield's pasture and is surrounded by many fond memories as well as mystery. The old rock commissary by its side which was used for supplies and to stow away the cow hands who partook too freely of the jug at the big ranch dances, stands almost intact, seemingly as good as when it was built. "The mystery I refer to has to do with the murder of one John Bryson who later owned the ranch and was found shot to death in his bed in the east room. "For sometime there were no fences but when a fence did finally go around our ranch in 1888 there was a lot of comment on the distance between the gates. The south one was at Salt Gap, the east one Stacy, the north one fifteen miles below Ballinger, and the one on the west side at Point Rock. "Those were the days when you had to fight to hold your own in more ways than one. It was ride and ride 00055hard, sometimes day and night. Men would be sent out on what was termed outside work and often be away six months, working with outside wagons around water holes and lakes, throwing cattle back toward the headquarters ranch. They would sometimes wander 250 miles up and down the river. " My husband sold his first ranch to the Concho Cattle Company. Thedeal was made in Dallas and the payment made, not in check but in cash. I remember how he lay awake nights wondering what to do with all that money. I wanted him to put it out on interest and live an easier life but not my husband- no easy going for him. 'I'm too young to retire,' he said, and went to the Indian Territory and bought a ranch which he later sold to a northern buyer for 400,000.00. He took life a little easier before he died but he was like I am now, he believed in being up and at it if there was anything to do. Why I can still do more then a lot of these younger women and I manage to keep busy at something every day." 0006Range-lore Elizabeth Doyle San Angelo, Texas. BIBLIOGRAPHY Mrs. R. L. She married (2) Robert Lyons SHAW September 03, 1848, son of Jonas SHAW and Amanda NEWMAN. He was born May 05, 1829 in LA, and died December 06, 1852 in Galveston Co., TX. Notes for Robert Lyons SHAW: 1850 Clear Creek and Dickinsons Bayou, Galveston Co., TX Robt Shaw 21 farmer b. LA Sarah 17 b. TX (neighbors are Henry Wilcox family and E. M. Bates family) There is a pioneer cemetery on the Bolivar Peninsula, located within the presently incorporated town of Crystal Beach, Texas. To reach this graveyard, one turns from State Highway 87 between the Ship's Inn building and the new waterslide, onto a crossroad leading toward the intracoastal canal. On the left, about 100 yards away, is a culvert that was established several years ago by the local American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Chapter 1591. There, in a complex of native trees plus some cultivated plants gone wild, one sees several inscribed tombstones, rather randomly situated. In 1954, Mr. W. T. Hawes, of the Galveston County Engineering Department, listed the names and data on the six gravestones he discovered while making a survey in that area. (See Table 1.) At present, there are only five stones in position, in various stages of preservation: 1) The Milton Yates marker is erect and well preserved, and the grave is surrounded by a crude fence consisting of four corner metal pipes held together by several strands of heavy wire; 2) The stone of Robert Lyons Shaw is in generally good condition with rather elaborate carved designs, but a small piece of the upper right corner is missing; 3) The Patton gravestone lies flat on the ground and broken into several large pieces. The inscription is complete and in good condition, except that it gives only the name Patton, aged 46 years, and the death date of July 1, 1872. A separate stone has the initials C. R. P., which probably refers to C. R. Patton; 4) ROBERT LYONS SHAW Robert Lyons Shaw was born on May 5, 1829 in Louisiana and died on December 6, 1852. He married Sarah Dunman, who was born in 1833 in Texas. SARAH WAS THE DAUGHTER OF JOHN DUNMAN AND ADELINE BARROW-DUNMAN, JOHN DIED IN 1840 AND ADELINE DIED IN 1841. MARTIN DUNMAN, JOHN'S BROTHER WAS GUARDIAN OF SARAH DUNMAN AND HER BROTHER ROBERT DUNMAN. MARTIN DUNMAN ALSO HAD A DAUGHTER NAMEDSARAH WHO MARRIED WILLIAM REEVES. Robert Lyons was the eldest son of Jonas and Amanda Shaw. He was placed under the guardianship of Martin Dunman, who was born in Louisiana in 1804, during his father's land survey in the late 1830s. When Jonas Shaw died in 1847 leaving no will, M. Dunman appealed to the courts, in the name of his charge, for partition of the estate. The estate, which was considered familial property, was left under the guardianship of the widow, Amanda Shaw, except the portion for the married daughter, Mary Ellen Dorsett, and her husband, William L. Dorsett. In the meantime, Robert Lyons married his guardian's ADOPTED daughter in 1849. When Robert Lyons Shaw died in 1852 his estate was probated.23 THEIR IS CONFUSION ON THE TWO SARAH DUNMAN'S BEING RAISED BY MARTIN DUNMAN NOTE: SOME INFO BEEN CHANGED FOR THIS REASON..ROBERT LYONS SHAW'S WIFE SARAH DUNMAN, DID NOT MARRY WILLIAM REEVES (MARTIN'S DAUGHTER SARAH DUNMAN DID) Sarah (Dunman) Shaw, was married to William Reeves, who was born in New Jersey in 1816. He had been a boarder in her father's house on the peninsula. In the meantime, Martin Dunman had acquired much property, especially that deeded to him by the Burrell Franks survey. When Dunman died in 1854, he left much property to his widow, Elizabeth, and she left to the Reeves. When the latter moved to another county, they sold much of their property on the peninsula. Resident of Houston 59 years. Obituary mentions having 3 sons. He moved to Houston when he was 4 from Missouri (about 1882). Found in the Washington Cemetary book, donated to the Clayton Genealogical Library. He was a member of Houston Consistory Scottish Rite Bodies, Cade Rothwell Lodge No. 1151, A. F. and A. M., Knights Templar, Will N. Kidd Chapter No. 424, R. A. M., Andral Vann Chapter No. 741, O. E. P., O. H. and R. J. and mother, (name torn off), brothers (names torn off). There is a photo of him. When there was a burial at Washington Cemetary and there was an obituary printed in the newspaper, the record keeper cut out the obituary of each person being buried and made was a part of records of the cemetary. William was married to Jennie's cousin (name unknown) before he married Jennie according to the family. She is buried in Glenwood Cem. The Noland's were part owners and on the board of trustees of the Washington Cemetary in downtown Houston, Harris Co., TX.: This cemetery borders Glenwood Cemetery and consists of 21.3 acres. Its original 27 acres were purchased in 1887 by local German businessmen who formed an association called Deutsche Gesellschaft von Houston, the German Society of Houston, and established a cemetery for Houston's German citizens. Washington Cemetery was called the German Society Cemetery until approximately 1918 when its name was changed to protect it from World War I anti-German sentiment. There are close to 7000 graves here, including at least 105 Confederate and more than a dozen Union soldiers. If you're wandering around this graveyard and happen to notice the 1820 marker for Alexandros Seitandes, it means nothing more than that the stonecutter made a mistake. The headstone should read 1920. The same mistake was made on another stone dated 1847. It should read 1947. Former caretaker, Leona Tonn, lived on this property from the late 1930's until July 1977. Her death is one of Houston's unsolved murders. Vandalism has cost The Concerned Citizens for Washington Cemetery Care, Inc. (also known as CCWCC) several thousand dollars yet some damage just can't be reversed. Restoration of this cemetery has been truly a labor of love and respect. In the mid-20th century, Washington Cemetery was financially abandoned yet the widow (Jennie C. Sharman Noland) of the caretaker attempted to keep it up. After she died, the graveyard was severely neglected. In 1977, a group of Houstonians, many whose ancestors are buried at the cemetery, collected $20,000 and began restoration and maintenance. They hauled away trash, cleared brush, repaved roads, ran waterlines to the property, stabilized headstones, added front gates and security lights, researched the lives of the people buried there and published a history of them, microfilmed burial records, and located and marked previously unmarked graves of about 600 people. So, they were prepared to take advantage of a new Texas state law that took effect in 1995 that allows abandoned cemeteries to be legally adopted by those who can demonstrate an interest in, connection to, and willingness and ability to restore and maintain them. By taking legal control of the grounds, they are able to sell any undeveloped plots and use the funds for maintenance and improvements. As of 1999, the CCWCC has spent more than $500,000 and enormous numbers of volunteer hours to restore this graveyard. Note about above article: Sometime after the death of Leona Tonn, step-sons of William Willie" Lee Noland (grandson of Willie Lee and Jennie Noland) moved into the house on the cemetary property. They lived on the property until mid 1982. When there was a burial scheduled, the information was recorded in cemetary records and arrangements were scheduled for the graves to be dug. While the stepsons were living on cemetary property, parts of a movie (Student Bodies) were filmed in the cemetery. This movie was released in 1981. It did not get good reviews. The two, John Lang & Willie Noland had an agreement that which ever one died first, the other one would inherit their shares. Mr. Lang died 3 or 4 years before Willie so Willie received Mr. Lang’s shares. Willie’s shares passed on to Jennie Sharman Noland upon Willie’s passing. Jennie C. Sharman Noland's interest passed on to William "Willie" Lee "Bill" (grandson) upon her death. Raymond did not receive her shares as he had passed away before she did. William "Willie" "Bill" Lee Noland was in high school when his father died. He stated that his father served in WWII in the Pacific Front against the Japanese. Rumor has it that Raymond Noland committed suicide. Raymond Noland was divorced from Mamie. It is unknown if the agreement was verbal or written. . Raymond Noland was married after his divorce from Mamie (Lotz). His obituary states he had a widow by the name of Evelyn. Per grandson of William "Willie" Lee Noland, Mr. Noland worked for the German Society. Washington Cem. was an association between John Lang (owned largest of shares), William Noland owning 2nd largest of shares (37 %) and 4 or 5 other shareholders. William Noland was last survivor of shareholders and eventually owned largest of shares. When Mr. Noland died, his (2nd) wife Jennie (Sharman) Noland inherited the shares. When Jennie died, her grandson, William "Willie" Lee Noland (b. 1933) became owner. Mr. Noland also worked for Hollywood Cem., Houston, Harris Co., TX. Research has been done on the cemetary and research is showing that Willie Lee Noland owned some of the shares in a "Not For Profit" corporation. The cemetary association was orginially chartered prior to 1900 "For Profit". It became "Not For Profit" in 1918. No one has been able to acquire evidence that Mr. Noland or his wife actually owned the cemetary property or that they owned all the shares. It has been determined that John Lang, Jr. (died 1935) owned more shares than the other shareholders, but he did not own the majority of the shares. Three of the 37 orginal shares were subsequently acquired by CWCC Inc. It is said that several other shares are held by various other families and institutions. The cemetery corporation ceased to exist in 1947, when the last charter expired. Per: Bernice Mistrot, Secretary - Washington Cemetery Historic Trust On a notarized deed for a cemetary plot for Mrs. Max Wagenknect, it states W.L. Noland as President of Washington Cem and Mrs. W. L. Noland (Jennie C. Sharman Noland) as Secretary and it was dated May 1936. NOTE about shares of Washington Cem.: An envelope was found (2004) where someone had written down some names. There are 22 names on the envelope and at the end is the words 22 shares. It would appear that each person owned one share. Perhaps Mr. Lang and Mr. Noland bought out the others’ shares as time went on. There is also no date on the envelope. Some of the names are probably not spelled perfectly. Also notice that the Noland name is not listed. A partial list of the original stockholders in Washington Cemetary (dated Jan 1, 1940): Aladof Haffen (Charles A. Hahn) 12 John Wagner 34 E. F.
