She was born Bet. 1630 - 1640. Notes for Richard (speculative) DAVIS: It is believed that Richard Davis is Davis' father and that Davis' was born out of wedlock. According to researchers, there was a Hannah Davenport, immigrating about 1650 and Anne Davenport, immigrating about 1658 and one of these women could be Davis' mother. It has been found that Anne was living very near Richard Davis (land records) and there is no mention as to further research on Hannah. From researching land records and other records available, it may be that Anne Davenport would be Davis' mother.

She was born Abt. 1660. Notes for Davis DAVENPORT: Davis was first found with his son, Martin, in King William County Quit Rent Rolls of 1704, but a Davenport Plantation and Landing existed on the Mattaponi River in Pamunkey Neck in 1696. I wonder why it is that no one has been able to learn Davis' wife's name but they can determine his children's names? Depending on the Davenport researcher, his birth year varies. He may have been born out of wedlock, according to one researcher, however this is speculation. It may be that his father was Richard Davis and mother was Anne Davenport. Who was Anne's parents? Some research is my own using records such as census, birth, death, marriage, etc. Who would I tend to believe as a credible researcher with credible information? John Scott Davenport It is believed some records may have been destroyed by fire or other means in New Kent, King & Queen, King William, Caroline, and Hanover counties. from what records that could be found, the earliest was a female Davenport in Pamunkey Neck, VA in 1650. In 1704, Davis and son Martin owned land in King William Co., VA. They were slave owners. Davis' mother could have been either immigrants Hannah Davenport (transportee 1650) or Anne Davenport (transportee 1658). It is learned that Anne appears to have lived very near Richard Davis, who is believed to be Davis Davenport's father. There is no mention as to what happened to Hannah Davenport. There is no mention of the ages of Anne and Hannah. Births are estimated. It is believed that Davis' father is Martin b. 1625 King William Co., VA and that Martin's father is Lancelot b. 1599 England. The major researchers who seem to know what is going on and who have done extensive research do not have ancestors named for Davis. There are many researcher's of this family and there are variations of birth/death years/locations. This can be quite confusing. I cannot verify most of the information and try to make sense of information I locate and I try to determine who may be more accurate. I have found birth years of some people being after the births of their own children!! I don't claim to be perfect and I am sure some of my information is not accurate. Notes for Henry GAMBILL: In a deposition given by his brother-in-law, Thomas Baker, who was with him on a venture, died and was buried in the Welsh tract, PeeDee River waters, SC, in the mid-to-late 1760s. When Mary Gambill and several of her children moved to western North Carolina in mid-to-late 1770s, other children and their families from SC joined them there.

Notes for Julius Terry DAVENPORT: Apparently to satisfy the debts of Philemon, James Jr., and Joel--as well as his own, Julius sold his 337 acre plantation in Cumberland in September 1767. (He was the only one of Thomas, Sr.'s sons who lived over the ridge to the west on the waters of Willis River of the James River. Thomas and all of his other sons lived in a cluster on the waters of the Appomattox River.) Julius was landless thereafter until his father gave him title to the Old Homeplace and 100 acres in 1772, subject to Thomas, Sr.'s life estate. Apparently still hard pressed financially, Julius sold his rights to the homeplace in June 1772, three years before his father died in 1775. While Julius is present in Cumberland County records until 1780, he appears to have moved to Buckingham County in 1776. (Buckingham County, where all early records have been lost to a series of courthouse fires, is in the next county west of Cumberland.) He was tax listed in Buckingham County in 1782 in a household that contained one White Titheable, no Blacks. No further traces of Philemon, James Jr., and Joel, believed sons of Julius, have been found. Their flight from debt most likely would have been towards the Mountain Frontier of Southwest Virginia. They may have preceded their brother Thomas to the Holston River country of later Washington County, and have been ancestors of those East Tennessee Davenports whose origins are still unidentified.

Notes for Henry DAVENPORT, Sr.: Henry was much older than most of his Twentieth Century descendants have credited. Family legend claims that he was born in the mid-1730s, and that Henry's (second) family (where they ignore a first family) was born and reared in Buckingham County. Public records, however, heavily document that Henry and his first and last family lived in Cumberland County, where all of his children were born--except possibly the youngest . Only a few years before his death, in May 1788 he and Ann sold the Cumberland plantation where they "now lived"--and then apparently moved to another plantation that Henry owned in adjacent Buckingham County on the Appomattox River. In February 1789, Henry was back in Cumberland to convey slaves to his eldest son (second family) Wilson. When Henry died, Wilson, not yet 21-years-old but by then--or soon to be--an attorney, in February 1792 was appointed guardian to his six younger sisters by Cumberland County Court--which was passing strange if the family was resident in Buckingham County. There is no question that Ann lived fifty years and more of widowhood in Buckingham, and likely reared Henry's second family there.

Martin Slaughter Davenport was 12-13-years-old in 1777, and would have signed the petition with his father David Davenport who did not sign the copy of the petition that Henry and Martin did sequentially, Henry being first to sign. In October 1832, Alex and James Frost took a drove of hogs to Georgia for $8.00 per month. He made arrangements for his wife Matilda and their children to stay with her brother, Isaac Davenport while he was away. Alex was gone for two months and a few days and on his return, he found that Isaac Casaday had come to take Matilda and the children back to Indiana. Alex overtook them some 25 miles south of the Ohio River. Matilda would not return with Alex, but gave up her children and he brought them back to Wayne County. In 1845, Alex was in White County, Tennessee. The divorce was granted at the October Term of Court in 1834. They were married by Reverend George Dodson.

The subject of this notice was married to Miss Andrew (sister of our late Bishop Andrew), who still survives him, and with whom he lived a devoted husband, a bright and shiny light in the interest of Church and Country. He processed in a rare degree practical common sense, and an inquiring mind, added to a fair education, that kept him well-informed as regards the great political, literary, and ecclesiastical movements of the age. He liked to read. In his house the Minister of Jesus could not only find a home, but books on theology and early Methodism. He was wise in counsel, and his great soul was felt in the correctness and cogency of his admonitions. To use his own language, he was "born with an unusually incredulous heart, and several years made an honest effort to be an infidel." And 1824 he attended the Salem Camp meeting, in Clark County, Georgia. At a night service, as he approached the stand, Dr. Lovie Pierce rose and with unusual emphasis read Charles Wesley's Hymn, beginning, "Stay, thou insulted spirit, stay," which produced a strange feeling in his heart. The text was Romans xi: 22 - "behold the goodness and severity of God." When the sermon closed the last fragment of infidelity was gone, and he, for the first time seeing himself a lost and ruined sinner, knelt for prayer and called on God to be merciful. At that meeting he was converted, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the communion of which he lived a faithful and useful member to the end of his life. His views on the plan of salvation were more than ordinarily clear and correct. Although brightly converted, he was often in great doubt and darkness, which he ascribed to not coming to Jesus when he was a child. But with all, he had the true, spiritual idea of trust in God. He was an invalid for about six years and 10 months combined to his bed. During all these years of gloom he wrestled in prayer to God for unmistakable assurance of his acceptance with God. Fifteen months before his death, when bathed in penitential tears at the mercy seat for the witness of the Spirit, he said, "if I never again have it, and am finally lost, I will tell the enemy till doomed, I still trust God." Oh, how great and such faith! At last the cloud lifted, the shadows fled, and he exclaimed, "my God is reconciled," etc. He never had another doubt and praised God all the time - often saying "hallelujah" - "glory to God" - "happy, so happy" - "bright, bright." He had always been devoted to the Sunday school, the children, and young people, but now he extorted them, and all who came near him, to meet him in heaven, and not to be discouraged though Satan should pursue them to the gates of the city. He had reached "three great tribulations" faith's beatitude in sight of the Jordan, and there rejoiced and hope of an entrance being administered unto him that would be all the sweeter because of the afflictions. His departure was ecstatic. As the ship loosed its mooring he exclaimed distinctly, "heaven, sweet heaven;" "Farewell;" "Glory, Glory;" and was not, for God took him. John M. She was the daughter of Reverend John and Mary 0. Andrew, and was the last of nine children, six daughters and three sons, one of whom is now our glorified Bishop James Andrew of precious memory. She was married to William Davenport, December 10, 1818, by Reverend Gabriel Christian, and survived, in much feebleness, her husband, about nine years. Her educational advantages were few but possessing a strong natural mind, being a lover of books and a constant reader of current literature, particularly that of her church, she developed into more than ordinary intelligence. Converted in childhood, she joined the Methodist Church and lived seventy-three years in its fellowship. Her Christian life was beautiful, devoted to her church and the calls of Christ, she kept all religious interest well in mind. She was hopeful and looked with great faith for the triumph of Christ's Kingdom, and when, because of infirmity of age, she cannot attend the public meetings, she wrestled in prayer for the Holy Ghost upon the preacher and congregation. She was affectionate as a mother, and faithful as a wife, but she was fond of the Bishop especially, and watched with amazing interest the points in his life that identified him with the history of the church. Left, as she felt, almost alone in the world, because of the death of her friends of her youth, she became quite taciturn toward the last, but when she did talk it was in beautiful expressions of same being with the Saints and rest.
