Thank you Jo Anne Isom for the pictures, documents and copy of the book

I received a copy of the history and have transcribed it on this page.  It was typewritten using a typewriter.  I have made corrections to typo errors, typed out words that may have been abbreviated and added states when there was only a county.  I do not know when this book was completed or who the author of it is.  I figure this book was done in the late 1930's.  I cannot verify all information is accurate, but the research was done before computers were popular.  I could have scanned all pages and placed them on this website but having to jump from page to page would not be convenient for readers.  Thank you, Diann Tooley

A History of the Crudup Family

            (1) Josiah Crudup is said to be the first of this family in America and he is said to come from Wales.  He died some time before 1760 as his wife, Mary, a widow, makes her will in Halifax Co., NC, February 1, 1760, which will was probated March term 1761.  He is said to be the son of Lord John Crudup of Wales.

Child:

            (2) John Crudup(2)  (Josiah 1) was born probably in Isle of Wight Co., VA and died in Halifax Co., NC 1753.  He married Mourning Dixon, daughter of Penelope and Thomas Dixon of Isle of Wight Co., VA.  John Crudup bought 250 acres of land in Northampton Co., NC March 13, 1745.  John and Mourning Crudup witnessed the will of Samuel Williams November 18, 1740.  Mourning Crudup was executrix of John Crudup's estate as per inventory of his personal property, exhibited in August 1755.  after John Crudup's death, Mourning Crudup was married twice more.  First to Micajah Thomas October 7, 1753 and again to James Smith.  She made her will as Mourning Smith May 18, 1778.  The will was probated July 1781.  (Note the author has Isle of Wright)

Elisha Battle was a Justice of the Peace in 1761, member of the Provincial Congress, which met at Halifax, April 4, 1776.  Also the Halfax convention of November 1776.  he was Senator from Edgecombe Co., NC 177_ to the end of the war and a member of the State Convention of 1788.

Josiah Crudup appears to have settled on Little River, in Wake Co., NC about 1764.  The first mention found of him in the records of that county is the purchase of land from William Wilder, Jr.  There are three deeds:  September 6, 1784 400 acres, September 6, 1784 100 acres, September 18, 1784 125 acres.  Josiah Crudup died the latter part of 1818 or in 1819.  His tax returns were made in 1818 and never since.  His administrator pro tem reported inventory and sale of his estate 23 and 24 of April 1819.  Jeremiah Battle was administrator and in the distribution of the proceeds of the sale of the following names appear:

Graves.  The will was probated in the September Term 1809, Wilson Co., court and recorded the following January (1810).  The three heirs petitioned the court during September Term of 1827 for a division of the estate.  This division was completed in 1828.  Elisha B., Robert and John Crudup benefited by this division.

John Crudup in is will mentions his wife as Rebecca.  The court order dividing the property mentions her as Rebecca Martin.  It is said that her maiden name was Rebecca Temple and that she married a man by the name of Martin after the death of John Crudup and had a son by the name of Quincy Martin.
