Notes for Thomas Hudson BARRON:

From the Handbook of Texas Online:

Thomas was an early settler and Texas Ranger. He enlisted in the KY militia at Leitchfield, KY 11-15-1814. He participated in the battle of New Orleans on 1-8-1815. He received for his service a bounty grant og 160 acres. By 1817, he was one of the early settlers on the upper Red River in the area of Miller Co., AR.

In late 1821, he and his wife and first child passed thru Nacogdoches, TX with several of the first of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists. He was a member of the Austin colony for a year before returning to AR territory. He was commissioned magistrate of Jefferson Township, Miller Co., AR on 3-8-1826. He appears on the tax records for Hempstead Co., AR in 1828, 1829, 1830 and in the census for Hempstead Co., AR in 1830.

In Jan. 1831, he returned to TX, according to Austin's Register of Families. In 1832, he received from Austin, a grant of one league of land in Brazos Co., TX east of Edge on the Old San Antonio Road. During this period, he contracted to settle at Nashville in Sterling C. Robertson's colony. He was granted 24 labores of land now in McLennan Co., TX on 3-25-1835 and one labor near the site of present Viesca on 6-10-1835.

Throughout his career, he was active in defense of the frontier. From before until after the Texas Revolution, he served as captain of the the Texas Rangers at Viesca, Nashville, Washington-on-the-Brazos and Tenoxtitlan, where he was commandant. In Jan. 1836, a ranging company was formed at Viesca with Sterling C. Robertson as captain and Thomas as sargent. Soon thereafter, he was promoted to captain. As the struggle for Texas Independence heightened, Thomas, now in middle age, was allowed to return home to assist in moving families and slaves ahead of the advancing Mexican front in the Runaway Scrape. At the Battle of San Jacinto on 4-21-1836, his company, in his absence, was commanded by Lt. Albert G. Gholson.

Early in 1837, Thomas' company of rangers established Fort Fisher at Waco Village on the Brazos, at a site within the city limits of present Waco. The reconstructed post is now the site of the headquarters of Co. F of the Texas Rangers and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.

At Independence, also in 1837, Thomas built a house, later purchased by Sam Houston. In 1847, Thomas homesteaded 320 acres on the Brazos and built the first white homestead on Waco grounds. His daughter, Mozilla, was the first white child born in the Waco settlement on 1-7-1850, although another child was the first white born within the formal city limits.

On 4-14-1851, Thomas, as clerk, opened the first district court of McLennan Co. with Judge Robert E. B. Baylor presiding. In 1857 or 1858, Thomas opened a steam mill on Barron's Branch in Waco, using the bolting system to grind wheat and corn. Machinery for carding wool and cotton was added in 1860. Throughout much of the 1860's, Thomas served as tax assessor-collector of McLennan Co., TX. A street, an elementary school, a creek and Barron Springs in Waco were named after him.

Thomas and his first wife had 12 children. He and his second wife had 10 children.

Late in his life, he moved to Falls, Co., TX near Blevins. He died in the home of his daughter, Mozilla Mixson, in Mastersville (now Bruceville-Eddy). His remains were moved in Dec. 1976 to First Street Cem., Waco, beside the entrance to old Fort Fisher and the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame.

After his service in the War of 1812, he joined a group of hunters and trappers who explored the area now forming the border of Texas and Oklahoma. By 1820, he was a settler in Old Miller Co., AR Territory, which now includes Bowie and Red River Counties, TX.

On 3-2-1999, a Historical marker was erected at the grave of Thomas Barron in the Texas Ranger Museum Cemetary in Waco.

Another source said he was buried in Cox Cem. in Bruceville and then moved to Ft. Fisher.

Children of Thomas BARRON and Elizabeth CARNALL are:

+ 5 i. Almedia Olivia3 BARRON, born Sep 10, 1832 in Washington Co., TX; died Jan 19, 1908 in Murray Co., TX.

6 ii. John M. BARRON, born Jul 21, 1821 in Miller Co., AR; died 1847 in Brazos Co., TX or Bucksnort, Falls Co., TX.

Notes for John M. BARRON:

He was about 26 when he died. I have no information if he was married or had children. I have no information where he is buried or what caused his death.

BUCKSNORT, TEXAS. Bucksnort, originally Jarrett Menefee's Supply Station, was located on a 320-acre prairie owned by Thomas J. Chambersqv in what is now east central Falls County. The settlement, about five miles northeast of the falls on the Brazos River below the rebuilt Fort Milam, which provided protection for the settlers, was bounded on the west by a bayou that flowed into Musselrun Creek and on to the Brazos River. When John and Mary Menefee Marlin and James and Nancy Taylor Marlin returned with their families to their land near the Falls of the Brazos in 1837 after the Runaway Scrape,qv they found some of their Menefee relatives at the Angelina River. The families of the brothers Laban and Jarrett Menefee accompanied the Marlins and others to the east side of the river, where they formed a little settlement, later called Bucksnort. John Marlin's fort-like home lay three miles south and Dr. Allensworth Adams's home a mile directly north. Supplies were freighted from lower settlements, and the community grew until it had enough children to form a school.

The name Bucksnort, said to have been suggested by an inebriated customer of the saloon, was first recorded in 1844 by William Howe of Ellis County: "Bucksnort is the only supply station between Nashville and Dallas where a man can go to buy food and supplies." When Robertson County was organized in 1838, elections ordered by the county court were held at or near Jarrett Menefee's place. In January 1842 Menefee was one of three men appointed by the Robertson County Commissioners Court to consider a road from Franklin to a place near the falls, or to Menefee's place, and in October of that year five men were ordered to study the route and lay out the road. In 1843 Capt. J. B. Smith recruited a company of eighty men from the surrounding country who eventually joined John Coffee Hays'sqv Texas Rangersqv and served in the Mexican War.qv

Movement to the area was steady in the 1840s, and the settlement grew until it had a school, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, a racetrack with a stable, and a stagecoach stop that served as a post office. On February 8, 1845, Jarrett Menefee purchased the 320-acre tract he had improved as overseer for Chambers. When Menefee died sometime before 1849, his heirs sold the property to J. E. Francks, who in turn sold it to three prominent brothers, David G., John, and James B. Barton. The three men operated the Barton Ranch on the property until their deaths. In 1846, when Limestone County was marked off from Robertson County, Bucksnort became part of Precinct 2 of Limestone County. Four years later, the site became part of Falls County. The name of the settlement was first officially recognized when the Robertson County Commissioners Court ordered an election to be held at the usual place in Bucksnort at the time of annexationqv to the United States. Bucksnort residents, however, had already begun to scatter to other communities as the area became safer, and more settlers left as new lands were made available. The community became extinct by about 1852.

Notes for James Henry PATTERSON:

My genealogy data was provided from my cousin Frances Jones Johnson, who lives in the Dallas area. She did extensive research many years ago.

Between the time James and his wife got married in 1838 and before their first child was born (1839), they moved from TN to AR. James would have been about 19 years old.

Was a rancher and farmer in AR until the Civil War. After the war, he moved his 1st wife and their children to Waco, McLennan Co., TX arriving 7-4-1865. In Waco, he opened a boarding house and dabbled in local politics. He was very successful in his business adventures and was quite wealthy when he died.

Served in the Civil War 1861-1865. He joined the Army in Arkansas. He has a CSA marker at his gravesite in the Greenwood Cemetary in East Waco (historic cemetary). Other Patterson family members are buried here. I understand this cemetary is located in a bad section of town. Have seen a few pictures of the surroundings.

Van Buren Co., AR - He was part of a group from many AR counties for the Ordinance of Secession of AR on May 6, 1861.

There are no Patterson's on the 1840 Crawford Co., AR census. So James Henry must have lived in a different county. He had to be in AR because one of his children was born in AR before 1840.

Notes for James Lafayette COURTNEY:

James Courtney, served the Union Army (age 18) but when the War ended and he had mop up duty he deserted and came home. (He later left home and went to Texas and raised a family.) This desertion, the only reason the family can figure out, caused the family so much shame that they changed their name to Haun and moved to the interior of Kansas in Morris Co. Haun Creek in the area was named for them.

J. L. Courtney's Certificate of War Service in the Union army records him as being 5 feet 10 inches tall with dark hair. Per Betty Duke, ancestor of J. L. Courtney had sandy brown hair and was 6 feet 4 inches tall. Jesse James was reported to have been between 5 foot 9 inches to 5 foot 11 inches tall. In J. L. Courtney's diary, he signed his name J. James several times.

Courtney rode up to the Barron ranch with the saddlebags of his horse, and the horse he was leading, full of gold. He purchased a 160-acre tract of farmland from Barron with the gold, and throughout the course of his life, he bought every new piece of farm equipment that came onto the market, paying for them with cash. As each of the children married, he paid cash for farms to give them a good start in life. It is known that Jesse James trusted no one, and with all the robberies attributed to him, he must have been a rich man. There is talk to this day in the Blevins area about the gold and silver Courtney buried in different places. In the front yard alone, at least two gallon jars of money were unearthed by his children, and he kept five-gallon buckets full of silver dollars sitting around the house. More than $50,000 in cash was found in one of his trunks. There is no way to explain how a man who was supposed to be an ordinary farmer was able to amass that amount of money from a 160-acre farm…unless he really was Jesse James, that is.

There really was a James L. Courtney who did serve in the Union Army as a bugler in Co. M under Captain Oscar Smith. This Courtney enlisted on 14 January 1864 in Warrensburg, Missouri, at the age of eighteen and is described as "five feet ten inches tall with dark hair and blue eyes" only the man buried in Blevins was six feet four inches tall, and it is not likely he grew six additional inches after reaching his maturity. Bugler Courtney is listed as deserting at Columbus, North Carolina, on 21 August 1865, but it is Duke’s theory that he was killed in that battle and not reported because his personal effects went missing. It was common practice for the Confederates to search the uniforms of the dead in order to identify them, and she thinks this could have been one way for Jesse to assume the identity of the real James L. Courtney. Whatever the case, the Union Courtney is clearly not the same Courtney as Duke’s great-grandfather, who used this bugler’s name and service record to obtain a pension.

Census records and other documents indicate that the real James L. Courtney changed his name to James L. Haun sometime between 1865 and 1870. In 1865, he was living with his parents, Stephen and Dianah Courtney, in Miami County, Kansas. But by 1870, the Courtney family had become the Andrew Jackson Haun family. I believe that when James L. Courtney took the alias James L. Haun, Jesse James took the alias James L. Courtney.

Notes for Joseph Wakefield JONES, Sr. MD:

He was a physician. He attended Eclectic MD Institute in the fall of 1888, Cincinnati, OH. He attended school in St. Louis, MO. I (Diann Tooley) located their burial sites in 2001. They have really nice headstones which were purchased by their daughter, Ella Gertrude Jones. She also paid for perpetual care of their plots in the 1970's. She and her daughter and son-n-law, Lila and Archie Wehmeyer, visited Stockdale, TX. They located what used to be the office of Dr. Jones. There in the window (what was a pharmacy) were old medicine bottles that once belonged to Dr. Jones.

His death was sudden. His high blood pressure was controlled by medications. One month prior to his death, his usual doctor retired and the new doctor took him off all his meds. He had been treated at Wilford Hall Medical Center in (USAF) San Antonio, TX
